Centenary Fun Day

Celebrations to mark the 100th consecutive year of publishing in Australia began in earnest at the South Melbourne offices of Oxford University Press on April 24, 2008. The centenary celebration and staff ‘fun day’ was launched by Michael Danby, local Federal Member for Melbourne Ports.

In his opening address, Managing Director, Peter van Noorden, set centenary goals to ‘educate and inspire all through rigorously researched and accessible materials that foster deep, transferable understandings’. He identified that as a department of Oxford University, Oxford University Press (OUP) has carved a unique place in the Australian educational publishing community, with a focus on excellence in research, scholarship and education.

As a symbol to represent Oxford University Press’ centenary, Michael Danby MP, and staff representative, Russell Griffiths, conducted a flag raising to symbolise Oxford’s commitment to local publishing (Australian flag), its close links to Oxford University (OUP flag) and recognition of 100 years of Australian publishing (centenary flag).

Peter van Noorden proclaimed that OUP’s staff members would be at the core of the centenary celebrations and that the launch would fittingly be a fun day for staff – a thank you for their efforts.

With speeches over, the jukebox was cranked up and the celebrations began with sumptuous treats from the ‘bake-off’ competition enjoyed by all in the marquis on a perfect autumn day in Melbourne.

Staff then enjoyed a great range of activities. There were opportunities to learn Bollywood dancing, hip-hop dancing, drumming, tai chi, wine tasting, cooking or photography from expert instructors.

The centenary fun day was the brainchild of two members of the Centenary Committee, Karen Hildebrandt and Jamie Campbell. It proved to be a refreshing and motivating day for the entire staff and a fabulous launch for OUP’s centenary celebrations.
