Case study 3.3: The Toowoomba recycled water referendum (p. 89)

For a similar case study, see the case of Telstra v Hornsby Shire Council (2006) 146 LGERA 10, where community members and a number of local councillors refused planning consent for the installation of a mobile telecommunications base station, due to (scientifically unsubstantiated) concerns about the health impacts of the radio waves.  The New South Wales Land and Environment Court rejected their concerns.

Other Australian recycled drinking water initiatives include:

 
• a proposal to top up the Sooley Dam catchment in Goulburn with recycled water (http://www.science.org.au/nova/095/095key.htm);
 
• The Western Corridor Recycled Water Project, supplying treated recycled wastewater to the Wivenhoe Dam, and South-East Queensland drinking supply (www.westerncorridor.com.au); and

Suggestions from the Western Australian Water Minister Graham Jacobs, and in the Gnangara Sustainability Strategy, that Perth’s drinking supply might eventually include recycled water.  (http://portal.water.wa.gov.au/portal/page/portal/gss)
