Readerful Rise is a collection of 42 books for struggling students in middle primary to lower secondary, featuring age-appropriate content and topics that are written at a level they can read successfully.
The books contain themes and storylines that resonate with older students to motivate them to read. The low word counts means readers can make rapid progress through the books and with chunky spines and around 60 pages in each book, they boost a student's confidence as they don't feel like they are reading books at a lower level than their classmates.

The Rise series covers Oxford Reading Levels 3–11, and the books in Levels 3–7 align with the Letters and Sounds phonics phases 3–6, so are all fully decodable, whilst still looking like age-appropriate, longer books.
After Level 6, the books gradually increase in complexity as students gain confidence and fluency.
This handy chart shows the books in each Level and Phase and lists the GPCs covered in each title.

Rise books feature accessible designs and carefully chosen fonts with space around the text. Exciting page layouts and unique typography draw readers into the story and support meaning.
The series also has books that are part of mini-series within the other Readerful collections, Books for Sharing and the Independent Library. Students can read books with the same characters, designs and themes as their peers, but at a level that suits their ability.
Readerful books feature authentic characters that represent all walks of life, so students can recognise themselves in the stories.

Rise books include a number of touch points where students get the opportunity to engage in the text meaningfully. Before reading, students can see a vocabaulary list with potentially tricky words, along with their definitions and location in the book. There is also a "Stop and Think' page to encourage readers to think about the themes and storyline in the book before they start reading, to help them draw on prior knowledge.
At the end of the story, there are comprehension questions to encourage students to think back to what they have read. Higher level texts feature a read aloud playscript or poem. The playscript can be read with a partner to help with fluency and motivation.

In a video series, literacy expert Lindsay Pickton explains the link between reading practice and fluency and reading motivation. Much like times tables or a sport, continuing to practice and in turn, improving, increases enjoyment and reading for fun.
Readerful books are designed to do just that. They remove the stigma, by using books with the same look and feel as other books in the classroom, but are carefully designed with easy layouts and decodable text.
