No period of Roman history is more fascinating or more widely studied than the last years of the Roman Republic, as the rivalry of generals and politicians like Pompey and Caesar, Crassus and Cicero played out amid corruption and violence, until the outbreak in 49 BCE of the first of the series of long civil wars which was to lead to the monarchy of the emperors. This book presents the first English translation to appear for over a hundred years of a key text for this period, Books 36-40 of Cassius Dio's Roman History, which is not only the fullest surviving account, but also a vivid and compelling historical narrative.
