Teach maths concepts and vocabulary through the familiar space of a story
Stories for Maths is a brand-new collection of books which have been carefully designed to help develop students’ understanding of maths concepts and vocabulary through the familiar and safe space of a story.
The series offers character-based stories for Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2, and is an exciting way to embed early mathematical principles through the power of great storybooks.
Engaging stories with loveable characters
At the heart of Stories for Maths are three motivating mini-series, centred around a cast of compelling and age-appropriate characters. Each year students are introduced to a new world and new characters to befriend as they engage with a variety of books that not only support development of maths concepts and vocabulary, but also deal with themes of friendship, sharing and working together.
The series explores maths concepts covered in the F–2 curriculum, including number and algebra, measurement and statistics and probability.
Stories for Maths is designed to encourage talk and strengthen maths vocabulary
Each book features engaging stories with built-in conversation prompts to explore maths concepts, plus an activity page at the back for immediate application of learning.
-

Vocabulary
Key maths words are bolded throughout the story, with the definitions shown on the back cover. -

Prompt Questions
The key words are included in prompt questions throughout the book. The questions encourage students to look at what's happening with the characters in the story and apply the concept. This includes counting, recognising patterns and measurement. -

Activity Pages
The activity pages are another chance to apply the maths concept. They can include further tasks using stimulus in the books, or could be a physical task.
Boost vocabulary, fluency, oracy and motivation
Maths concepts are fully integrated with the storyline and create meaningful connections for students which in turn improves retention over time. Each maths concept has been carefully selected to match core knowledge that students need in small, digestible chunks, in a context that they understand. They don't overpower the story, therefore there is no risk of cognitive overload for students.
