Stigma-free books for older struggling readers

Readerful Rise is a collection of 42 books for struggling students in middle primary to lower secondary, featuring age-appropriate content and topics that are written at a level they can read successfully.

The books contain themes and storylines that resonate with older students to motivate them to read. The low word counts mean readers can make rapid progress through the books and with chunky spines and around 60 pages in each book, they boost a student's confidence as they don't feel like they are reading books at a lower level than their classmates.

Readerful Rise reviewed

by Jeanette Coloca, Learning Specialist – Literacy, St Albans Secondary College

We are working with an intervention group and are not with the mainstream classes when we read these. Having said that, the students have commented “I’m so happy not to read those stories that just say, ‘Pat sat on a mat.’ They were so boring and I felt like a baby”.

They are really enjoying the more age-appropriate content, the complete detailed sentences and the story lines.

– on boosting students' confidence

"We use the decodables with our year 7 and 8 literacy intervention groups. We often struggle with having them engaged in written reading material, as everything that is pitched at their level is quite childish with a simplistic story line, or none.

Students have really enjoyed the series and the fact that each text tells a story."

– on Readerful Rise being appropriate for lower secondary students

"Personally, students have said that they have enjoyed that the texts are at their level, however, they still find they encounter a few new words that they hadn’t known. This provides great discussion points for our group, such as the word ‘daunting’."

– on low word counts helping readers progress

Students have appreciated that the books have a range of multicultural characters and not just characters with three/four letter names such as Jane, Pat, Matt. They have loved seeing unique names like their own, as we have a very large EAL cohort. One student was reading ‘Instruments from around the World’ and noted ‘hey the sitar! My dad taught me to learn how to play that when we went back home to India.’

- on the authentic characters and diversity reflected in the series

As the stories have characters and an actual plot (not often featured in decodables) students are able to make text-to-self connections.

One of my students was reading ‘Art Attack’ and they spoke about their love of painting and art, and how this was something they inherited from their mum. Then there are opportunities to chat about new vocabulary words.

Build confidence and fluency with
fully-decodable, high-engagement books

The Rise series covers Oxford Reading Levels 3–11, and the books in Levels 3–7 align with the Letters and Sounds phonics phases 3–6, so are all fully decodable, whilst still looking like age-appropriate, longer books. After Level 6, the books gradually increase in complexity as students gain confidence and fluency.

This handy chart shows the books in each Level and Phase and lists the GPCs covered in each title.

Hook readers in with exciting, accessible stories

Rise books feature accessible designs and carefully chosen fonts with space around the text. Exciting page layouts and unique typography draw readers into the story and support meaning.

The series also has books that are part of mini-series within the other Readerful collections. Students can read books with the same characters, designs and themes as their peers, but at a level that suits their ability.

Readerful books feature authentic characters that represent all walks of life, so students can recognise themselves in the stories.

Readerful Rise builds reading for meaning

    Vocabulary List

Before reading, students can see a vocabulary list with potentially tricky words, along with their definitions and location in the book.
  • A page from Readerful Rise Epic Trips that says A night trip on rails is fun, stop and think

    Stop and Think

Encourage readers to think about the themes and storyline in the book before they start reading, to help them draw on prior knowledge.

    Read Out Loud

Higher level texts feature a read aloud playscript or poem. The playscript can be read with a partner to help with fluency and motivation.

Build motivation and
encourage reading for fun

In his Readerful Rise video series, literacy expert Lindsay Pickton explains the link between reading practice and fluency and reading motivation. Much like times tables or a sport, continuing to practice and in turn, improving, increases enjoyment and reading for fun.

Readerful books are designed to do just that. They remove the stigma, by using books with the same look and feel as other books in the classroom but are carefully designed with easy layouts and decodable text.
