Mathematics and Statistics for Aotearoa New Zealand is a complete, curriculum-aligned teaching and learning programme for Years 0–8 – designed to save teachers time, deepen student understanding, and give every student the opportunity to succeed.
The programme has been designed and written by experienced teachers from across New Zealand and is designed so every student can access learning at their curriculum level – whether that means accelerating students who need additional support or providing enrichment and mastery for those working confidently at level.
The programme brings together three interconnected components; Student Workbooks, Student Dashboards, and a Teacher Dashboard. These components form a cohesive teaching and learning system grounded in evidence-based practice, explicit teaching, and the Science of Learning.
Teacher Dashboard
A complete and comprehensive digital teaching hub with:
whole-year teaching and learning sequences
step-by-step lesson plans for every lesson
front-of-class teaching slides for every lesson
online/printable assessments (formative and summative)
a wealth of additional curriculum-aligned resources.
Student Workbook
A carefully sequenced, full-colour write-in workbook, with:
beautiful stimulating illustrations and designs to engage learners
graded activities aligned to the NZ Curriculum 2025
'Quick 5' and 'Quick 10' starters for spaced repetition
'Progress Passports' to track and rate progress against every knowledge and practice.
All of our student workbooks are proudly printed in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Student Dashboard
An interactive student hub designed for independent learning and flexible entry points, featuring:
a brand-new student-friendly design
interactive learning objects
print and online quizzes with instant feedback
'read to me' functionality
a multilingual glossary
content videos and an AI-powered tutor (Phase 3 only).
Years 0–3
Building students' ability to investigate, classify, and describe numbers, shapes, and data, using materials and explicit teaching to develop reasoning and connect representations.
Years 4–6
Extending understanding from whole numbers to fractions and decimals, applying number operations to solve problems across measurement, patterns, shapes, probabilities, and data.
Years 7–8
Logic and reasoning to solve problems, make connections, and justify approaches, with students generalising concepts, working with algebraic notation, and beginning to explore integers and irrational numbers.
How it works
Our programme follows a consistent structure and sequence that aligns directly with the New Zealand Curriculum. The structure of all components reflects the structure of the NZC.
There are five or six Strands at each year level (depending on the requirements in the NZC).
Each strand is broken down into Elements.
Each Element is covered progressively over one or more Topics.
Most Topics are taught over the course of one teaching week (i.e. 5 x one-hour lessons).
Our 5-step teaching sequence
Our 5-step teaching sequence supports teachers and empowers students in every maths lesson!
New for 2027: The interactive assessment builder!
Our newest feature allows for additional assessment steps to enter the teaching sequence, teachers can use the interactive assessment builder to create and assign a range of formative and summative assessments at any stage of the teaching and learning cycle - from short formative quizzes to summative class tests and examinations.
Access comprehensive teacher support and planning advice at any time throughout the year:
Suggested teaching and learning sequences (for single- and multi-year classes)
Lesson plans for every topic (including additional classroom activities with supporting worksheets and blackline masters)
Marking guidance and support
On-demand product training and PLD videos
Information for parents, whānau and caregivers.
Use the online or print formative pre-test for every topic to:
assess each student’s strengths and weaknesses
assist with identifying students that may need some additional support and targeted teaching.
Use the lesson plan over the course of the week to guide your teaching and receive support and advice for every lesson (including additional levelled activities with links to Blackline masters (BLMs), activity sheets, mastery tasks).
Explicitly teach each new topic using front-of-class teaching slides – slides are provided for every lesson over the week and aligned directly to the Learn, Explore, Deepen activities in the Student Workbooks.
Use the Quick5s/10s activities at the start of each lesson as warm-up, revision and retrieval practice
Use the online or print formative post-tests for every topic to measure growth for each student over the week, then use the reporting tools to identify:
students who need additional revision and support
students who are ready for enrichment and extension.
Based on class results, use:
the front-of-class teaching slides (and additional activities in the lesson plan) to revisit and revise key concepts for students who need more support to move towards ‘Consolidating–Proficient’
the topic mastery task to offer enrichment for students who are already ‘Proficient’ and moving towards ‘Exceeding’.
At the end of each topic, use the Progress passport in the Student Workbook to:
allow students to rate their own level of confidence
track student progress against the Practice statements in the NZC
provide feedback and encouragement to students, parents and whānau.

What New Zealand teachers are saying
The scaffolding in the guided tasks has helped my students who are less confident in maths feel a sense of achievement in their understanding of different mathematical concepts.
Rose Golds, Northcross Intermediate School, Auckland
I think students are more motivated because they feel successful with mathematics. Whereas previously I think a lot of students came in with anxiety about maths, I now feel most of my class would say they are successful with maths.
Aimee Coombe, Diary Flat Primary, Auckland
The lesson plans have transformed the way we teach as a school team; they introduced consistency of practice… and save us so much time!
Intermediate teacher
It has improved the fluidity of students being in a workshop with me and then working independently and me knowing that the Oxford Book is giving them what I need them to be working on. The programme has definitely improved students’ knowledge and skills.

A library of training and support videos can be accessed online at any time (e.g. short ‘how to’ videos, longer introductory workshops, in-depth training for existing users).
Delivered to individual schools and/or groups of schools. Schools who select Oxford can access two sessions free of charge – one introductory workshop and one deeper-dive workshop.
In partnership with Evaluation Associates, these half-day workshops focus on helping teachers leverage the pedagogy and resources of the programme to enable all students to become confident, capable mathematicians.

FAQs
New Zealand Curriculum Knowledge and Practices have been grouped together to form ‘Topics’.
Most topics are taught over a week (i.e. 5 hours of teaching)
Each topic includes a pre- and post-test (in digital or print format), allowing for flexible groups to be formed based on prior knowledge and ability.
Every topic includes a detailed lesson plan and front-of-class teaching slides for every lesson.
The lesson plan and front-of-class teaching slides for every topic align directly with the Learn, Explore and Deepen tasks in the Student Workbook.
The programme includes two suggested teaching and learning sequences, giving teachers the flexibility to choose an approach that suits their context and their students.
Option 1: Connections planner: Topics are deliberately sequenced to move between strands throughout the year, following a spiral curriculum approach – concepts are continuously revisited with increasing sophistication, deepening understanding over time.
Option 2: Strand grouping planner: Topics are grouped more closely by strand, suiting teachers who prefer a structured, sequential approach. Where connections are relevant, lesson plans include explicit prompts to link back to previously taught content.
Detailed lesson plans for every lesson are provided.
If your school selects the Oxford programme for one or two phases:
every student will receive one Student Workbook and one Student Dashboard licence for their year level annually
every teacher will receive a Teacher Dashboard licence for every year level in the phase/s selected (i.e. if your school selects Phase 1, teachers will all have access to all teacher resources across Years 0–3).
‘Suggested teaching and learning sequences’ (with supporting lesson plans) offer critical support for multi-year level classes. The editable planners align teaching outcomes across multiple year levels and use clear colour-coding to help teachers quickly identify and deliver connected topics. They also provide practical guidance for managing the multi-year level classroom by suggesting how to cater for each year level throughout the learning sequence within the structure of the programme.
Topics across all year levels have also been grouped and named consistently, making it easy for teachers to identify aligned curriculum content and plan cohesive learning experiences.
Video support, developed in partnership with Evaluation Associates and contributing schools, offers practical, real-world examples of effective teaching in multi-year level settings.
