The 10 books in Unit 1 follow the lives and everyday activities of three friends who live in a rural area.

Pip, Sam and Tim 

Pip, Sam and Tim are friends. They live near each other and often play together in an old barn on the small farm that Pip’s family owns.

The Map 

Tim, Pip and Sam draw a map to show the houses they live in and the paths between the houses. Pip’s cat is part of the group. Are there any other animals around?

Tim 

When Tim, Pip and Sam meet up on the bike paths between their houses, Tim decides to show off how fast he can ride. Wait and see what happens!

The Cat 

Pip wants Tim to know and love her cat. She is trying to get Tim to pat the cat, but he doesn’t seem very happy about this. Then something happens!

It’s dinnertime and all is peaceful. Pip’s cat is on its mat waiting for a bowl of milk. Suddenly, the cat goes wild!

The Cap 

On a sunny day in the orchard, Pip is tossing apples to Sam and Tim, but they are having trouble catching them. Sam solves the problem: he uses his hat to catch the apples. Pip’s cap is lying on the ground. But what is happening to Pip’s cap?

Tip It 

The three friends, Tim, Pip and Sam are helping to set up an apple stall on the farm. It’s hard work lifting the heavy basket of apples, but they can do it. What else is going on?

Tim and Sam have one last job to do. They need to let people know where to buy their fresh apples. They are nailing signs to trees around the stalls. It is hard work, and they are ready to take a break.

Tim is busy feeding and watering the horse. Sam is helping. When Tim bends down to fill the horse’s water trough, the horse snatches Tim’s straw hat and starts chewing. Is this good for the hat?
